Nobody has time to clean everything, every week. The good news: you don’t have to. Most homes stay healthy and presentable on a simple rotation, and knowing which task belongs to which rotation is half the battle.
Here’s the schedule we recommend to our clients across Hackettstown and Warren County, room by room. New Jersey homes have their own quirks: pollen-heavy springs, humid summers that feed mildew, and long winters where the house stays sealed up. This guide takes all of that into account.
The kitchen
Weekly: wipe counters and cabinet handles (they collect more germs than your toilet seat), clean the sink and faucet, sweep and mop the floor, wipe the stovetop.
Monthly: degrease the range hood filter, wipe down cabinet fronts, clean the microwave inside and out, pull out small appliances and clean behind them.
Seasonally: empty and wipe the fridge shelf by shelf, clean the oven, vacuum the refrigerator coils, and go through the pantry for expired items. Spring is the natural moment for this one.
Bathrooms
Weekly: toilet, sink, mirror and shower walls. If anyone in your home has allergies or asthma, this is the room where non-toxic products matter most, since it’s small, enclosed and often poorly ventilated.
Monthly: wash the shower curtain or liner, scrub the grout, clean the exhaust fan cover. In NJ’s humid summers, mildew moves fast, so from June to September treat grout as a twice-monthly job.
Seasonally: declutter cabinets, descale the showerhead, wash bath mats.
Bedrooms
Weekly: change the sheets, dust surfaces, vacuum.
Monthly: wash pillow covers and duvet covers, vacuum under the bed, wipe down light switches and door handles.
Seasonally: flip or rotate the mattress, wash the pillows themselves, and clean the windows inside. During pollen season, keep windows closed on high-count mornings and dust more often; that yellow film on the sill is your cue.
Living areas
Weekly: vacuum floors and rugs (twice weekly if you have pets), dust visible surfaces, fluff and straighten cushions.
Monthly: dust ceiling fan blades and light fixtures, vacuum the sofa under the cushions, wipe baseboards, clean the TV screen and electronics with a dry microfiber cloth.
Seasonally: deep clean carpets, wash curtains or vacuum blinds, clean the windows. After a NJ winter with the heat running for months, a spring deep clean makes a bigger difference here than anywhere else in the house.
Entryway and laundry
Weekly: shake out the doormat, sweep the entry. In winter, salt and slush get tracked in daily, so a quick mop here saves your floors.
Monthly: wipe down the washer and dryer, clean the lint trap area with a vacuum, wash the doormat itself.
Seasonally: clean out the dryer vent duct (this one is also a fire-safety task), and swap the entry setup for the season: boot trays in winter, lighter mats in summer.
The honest version of this schedule
This is the ideal rotation. Real life has kids, dogs, double shifts and weekends that disappear. If you only manage the weekly list, your home will still be fine. The monthly and seasonal lists are where things quietly pile up, and they’re also the tasks most of our clients hand to us first.
A recurring cleaning every two weeks typically covers the entire weekly list plus a rotating slice of the monthly one, so nothing ever piles up. And a seasonal deep clean handles the rest in one visit: baseboards, grout, appliances, the works, with 100% plant-based, non-toxic products that are safe for kids, pets and anyone with allergies.
